According to Wikipedia, ‘Fear is an emotion induced by a perceived threat which causes entities to quickly pull far away from it and usually hide. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger.’ I am not going to attempt to explain what fear is because I bet that everyone has it in one way or the other. This post will attempt to share various definitions of fear and whether you know it or not, there are two sides to fear.
The question is, what side of fear would you choose? The positive side or the negative side? I hope you find something insightful in the definitions that I would be sharing and hopefully, when you are fearful about doing something, you can choose to embrace the positive sides of fear and just go for it. If you fail, congratulations, you at least did something, if you succeed despite your fear, way to go, either way, I am sure you will learn something from giving it a shot.
Here are five fear acronyms definition that are negative
* F.E.A.R: False Evidence Appearing Real- what this tells me is that, sometimes, I refuse to act or do something due to unrealistic and untrue evidence that my mind choose to believe about the certain task ahead. Instead of getting down and dirty to do the work, I automatically say, it cannot be done and allow my this side of fear to overthrow my will.
*F.E.A.R:False Expectations About Reality- a easy example that comes to mind very quickly is when I am deciding what job to take. Sometimes, this negative side of fear make me choose something that is not worth it because I am afraid to put myself out there to engage in what really matters to me. Have you ever felt that way before?
*F.E.A.R: Failure Expected And Received- this definition of fear is so real to me. I will be very rich if I was given a dollar for every time I consciously or unconsciously accept defeat and expect to fail before I even stepped out to do something or try something. I forgo taking a chance at something that is important to me because I am so nervous about how I will be perceived. I quit before I ever started and my fighting chance is minus zero. I psych myself out and receive that I will fail even before I engage in the task.
*F.E.AR: False Experience Appearing Real- what comes to mind for me with this definition has to do with my emotional life. I sometimes risk not going into a relationship because I am afraid of being rejected, being taught of as not enough and never good enough. These things are real and when I allow these thoughts to control and take over my mind, I instinctively coil into into a tangled form and retreat, refusing to come out and show my true self.
I gave four acronyms definition of the negative side of fear, there is a positive side of fear, which is the other side of fear as we know it. My next post will be about seeing fear as a positive emotion to move towards doing what you really want to do. It is not about not acknowledging your fears, it is more about, daring despite your fear.
Before I sign off, I really want to share an amazing Ted Talk I recently listened to not long ago. It is a timely piece and I think everyone need to hear it. I hope you are encouraged through it and find strength to do epic sh*t despite your fear. The link to this video is below. Shane Koyczan shared his heart, fears and struggles in this talk and challenges all to move beyond your fear and do epic things. I hope you enjoy hearing ‘To this day ….For the bullied and beautiful.”
