If I could get a nickel or dime for every single time I have considered myself poor, I will be very rich now. So let me ask again, “Are you rich or poor?” The easier answer is, of course I am very poor and we can all go on and on about why we are poor. Do we ever really consider the question? Well, I have had the privilege to consider this question over and over these past weeks. It is such an interesting question right? Am I rich or poor? To be fair, I will answer the question and tell you what my answer use was until this summer. My instant answer to this question is always a resounding YES! I am more poor than rich. I always list what I do not have, what I want that I have not being able to buy or get, I get on to how I wish I am rich and just go off on why I consider myself poor. I never for once thought about it in terms of being rich in other forms than having money. When the question pokes up, I instantly think about how I am poor monetarily. I never stop to consider other areas of life in which I am rich in. I instantly tie being rich or poor to what is in my bank account and what I do not have.
Well, I have learned to see this question in a different perspective, to change my mentality about how I view and think about the question. I am learning to renew my mind when this question comes up because it definitely comes up often. Who is not worried about money? We all are in one way or form. For me, I have always been in prison of, I do not have enough, I cannot do this until I have this specific amount and I unknowingly have limited myself by what I say and how I view the question of “Am I rich or poor?” So what has changed for me? Why do I have a new definition of what it means to be rich or poor? Why am I thinking that I am rich now instead of going with my instant answer of, I am poor? What has caused this shift in my thinking? Quite a lot of questions you might say right? I will do my very best to answer these questions and explain the concept I have learned and am growing in. I hope you can join me in changing your mindset about the answer you give too. I hope I can convince you to see another side to the usual answer we easily give.
Let me ask again, Am I rich or poor? Yes, I am rich than poor. I learned this truth not so long ago and it has been life-giving. There is an invisible chain that we need to break mentality to free ourselves from considering ourselves as just poor and having nothing to give to other people or this world. In our present day society, we have been and are continuously brainwashed to believe money is everything. We are taught to acquire money at all cost, that our self-worth and value is tie to how much we have in our bank account, how popular or famous we are, we are told that it matters the kind of car we drive and the neighborhood we live in. All of these things cloud our judgment to believe that without these things we are nothing, we have not amounted to much and that we literally have nothing to offer.
I have good news, you have something to offer. You are rich far above what you can imagine or think of and your richness and worth is not necessarily tie to money and how much wealth you have accumulated in the world’s eye. We need to start thinking deep and reaching from within us the values and thoughts we allow to make us and decide for us what we are. So how am I rich, how are you rich? You are rich! Yes, you are! Say it proudly, I am rich beyond the measures of this world. This is truth and it is a fact. You may be thinking, wait a minute, and slow down, what are you saying? Let me say it again, “YOU ARE RICH BEYOND MEASURES!” It is about time we start rethinking and redefining our own realities. You may not have the money in your bank to show for the statement I am asking you to believe about yourself but it is true. We are rich in ways the world refuses to acknowledge or tell us about. This was the game changer for me, realizing that, I have held myself back thinking, I am just a poor college student, there is nothing I can do. No, I am more than a poor college student and I can do a lot of things. So in what capacity are you and I rich?
* Firstly, you are rich mentally! This is huge. Think of it this way, you have all your senses working well for you, you can think, you can process information, and you can use it to advance in this life. We are blessed with intelligence. We can put ideas into actions and can have the opportunity to create beautiful things with our minds. You are not easily depressed; you are not held up in a psychiatrist unit. You have the mental freedom to know good from evil; you are not chained up or shackled up inside a prison. You have the freedom to move around easily.
*Secondly, you are rich physically! We have the opportunity to be alive and well. We are not bonded to the hospital beds with no hope. We have a chance to live life whole and healthy. We do not necessarily have any life threatening disease that is knocking on the door of our lives. We may not know where our next meal will come from but we have peace of mind, we have the ability to have hope, to get back up when we are knocked down. We do not have to rely on a machine to keep us alive, to give us air, to breathe into, to eat with. We can function well enough to do basic things. Tell, me if that is not being rich? There are some people in the hospital who have all the money in this world but do not have the privilege of being disease free. Their money cannot even save them or assure them that they will be well and whole again.
*Thirdly, you are rich spiritually! For those of us who believe in God, this is a great blessing that should not be taken lightly. Our believe in a God who loves and cares for us give us hope, give us faith to keep moving, to keep trying and to not give up on ourselves or our dream. Our belief in the lord helps us to get through the day, to get through illness, get through broken relationships and uncertainties.
I can go on and on and tell you the different ways I believe I am or you are rich in but that will be too easy. My challenge for you is to take a step back from your life, take an inward inventory and do a checkup of how you are rich! I am asking you to count your blessings and name them one by one. I am beseeching you to see a different angle to your life and what you have or have been given than the way the world expect you to look at it. I am imploring that you start renewing your mind and filling it with what is working for you physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally than dwelling on what is now working. I hope your attitude will change, I hope you will catch on and see a greater purpose to your life. I hope you can bless the world with your gifts, talents and resources that having a lot of money will not compare to. I hope you will start giving more of your time, energy and resources than maintaining the things as they are. I have something to give, you have something to give, we all do. I hope you will walk in the freedom of knowing you are rich beyond measures and you can start giving something now before the big bucks roll in. So, my dear friends, “Are You Rich Or Poor?
